Accused Changes Plea in Minot Courtroom

MINOT -- Justin McDermott, 35, Minot, entered a guilty plea to a AA felony charge ofMurder-Intentional or Knowing-Adult Victim, during an appearance in North-Central District Court late Wednesday morning.

The charge, which carries the possibility of life in prison without parole, stems from the shooting death of 36-year-old Kenny Javar in the parking lot of Minot’s Lamplighter Lounge on December 30, 2023.

Prior to accepting McDermott’s guilty plea, Judge Gary Lee told McDermott to “keep in mind this charge could mean up to life without parole."

“Do you understand that?” asked Lee.

“Yes, your honor,” responded McDermott.

Lee remarked to defense attorney Philip Becher and State’s Attorney Roza Larson that he would take a plea but wanted assurances from the legal representatives that all “work is done.” After receiving an affirmative response Lee asked McDermott for his plea.

“Guilty, your honor,” said McDermott.

Lee then ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for February 9, 2024.
